I don't think people will have many bad comments to make on this story. The University of Southampton is a proper, red-brick university that still has high standards. If the story was about the Solent 'University' (university my ar*e!) then things may have been different...

The comments I guess you were referring to, were probably aimed at the students who just see it as a rite of passage, not those who actually work hard to get into a proper university to do a proper course.

You get people going to uni nowadays that slack off and don't bother working hard then come out of it with a 3rd class degree, worth nothing. Or, they get 1st class degrees in subjects like 'tv soap studies' which if I am not mistaken was on the Solent 'University' course list a couple of years ago and maybe still is now.

All this crap going on now, making all these learning institutions into 'universities' and trying to get half the population going to them makes all the hard work that I put in a few years back and all the hard work others put in to get proper degrees from proper universities quite worthless really. Also, because there are so many less than intelligent people going to university and so many more slackers just doing it for something to do, it tends to give every other student a bad name. It's all a bit of a joke really. Just not a very funny one. Rant over.

Every country in the world make the same claim of it's university's. In OZ we are overloade by students from India, China, Japan, Singapore & other Asian countries.
Like those in the UK, they don't renew their visas, & blend in with the populations.
The University's make big money out of them as do the government.

There are several of these lists so I'm not sure how much credibility to put on them. Having said that, my old university came 5th in the same list, so perhaps they are very accurate after all.

All Alumni of Solent University..... stop being such a snob! I know dozens of people who've done very well at Solent (and I used to work for the Uni of Soton). My son actually chose to go there because of their good reputation with media courses, which he 'chose' to do. They have the same admission points as any other university!

But well done University of Southampton - we should be proud of both our universities!

Well of course it won't have the same as Oxbridge! and let's face it Oxbridge are still only for the 'elite' much as we try to claim otherwise..... My sons admission points were the same for Soton Uni as they were for Solent, i.e. 240. He preferred the course at Solent, found the staff more friendly, end of. Solent excels at certain things (fashion and media) as does Soton Uni at others like medical research, and engineering. It's about time that this snobbery ended between old and 'new' universities... it really is ridiculous! I can tell you right now (because i worked there) that some 'Schools and/or departments' at Highfield aren't exactly a shining example either, which is why they've been quietly down-sized or even got rid of in some cases. Make no mistake of how devious the Russell Group is about how they achieve this.....

I must say the torrent of negative comments about Southampton Solent University is neither correct nor intelligent. I am beginning to question the level of intelligence of those slagging off a less than five years old institution on the grounds of it's comparison to a a fifty seven year old institution. Are we saying every soton student is better than every solent student? With hands on heart can we rationaly guarantee Soton will deffinately be rated higher than Solent in fifty seven years time? Since Havard is 'rated 'the best in the world shall we all go there? Do you have to go to one of the so called russell group of institutions to have a better life? i also think the the so called low entry requirement for Solent in highly unfounded. Common sense requires us to encourage Southampton Solent University to attain grater heights in the future. God bless the City of southampton. I stand to be corrected.
