MAJOR crime detectives are hoping a poster appeal could help them solve a puzzling three-month-old murder.

Wieslaw Filus was found dead in his bed by his flatmates hours after he was attacked while out in Southampton.

However, despite exhaustive inquiries police have been unable to find who carried out the assault, which left the 45- year-old with fatal injuries, or even build up a picture of the victim.

They are particularly trying to expand information about his background, to discover what Mr Filus did both in and out of work in Southampton and in his native country.

It was on July 18 when detectives launched a murder inquiry following the discovery of Mr Filus’s body at his home in Denzil Avenue.

The night before, the Polish national, known to frequent the local area, had been out and returned home late at night.

Five people arrested shortly after the discovery of Mr Filus’s body have been released on bail until December while enquiries continue to establish what happened in the hours before his death.

Detectives have released a new photograph of the victim and a picture of a distinctive baseball hat that he regularly wore.

Posters have been printed in both English and Polish and distributed across the central part of the city, where Mr Filus lived.

Detective Inspector Dave Smith, who is leading the investigation, said: “People may not think they know anything important but, even if they just know a bit about his background and his everyday life, it will help us build up a picture of how he lived and may give us clues as to what happened.

“Of course we’d also like to hear from anyone who thinks they have direct information about what happened to Mr Filus on the night he died.”

A special phone line has been set up for Polish speakers to call direct on 023 8059 9969.

Alternatively, anyone with information can call the Operation Hopscotch team at Hulse Road on 101.
