Calls for inquiry in Liverpool bid for slice of cruise business

Chris Huhne Chris Huhne

A HAMPSHIRE MP is demanding a probe into the controversial plans of Liverpool port bosses to snatch a slice of Southampton's lucrative cruise business.

Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne says it is unfair the city's commercially funded port should have to battle for business against a rival funded by the taxpayer.

The Liverpool City Cruise Terminal was paid for with £20m of public money giving them a landing stage for megaliners.

However, the Northern port bosses now plan to turn their facility into a full "turnaround" terminal with baggage handling, customs and immigration.

This will give them the same cruise status as Southampton and help them lure up to 40 luxury liners a year away from other ports pulling in business worth more than £10m.

However, Liverpool port bosses need permission from the Department of Transport as a £9m EU grant was used to help build it.

Now Mr Huhne has written to the EU Competition Commission demanding an inquiry.

Let's hope it does some good, it's bad enough having Scouser's down south, let alone them bragging they nicked our cruise industry, mind you they nick everything else

cThere is nothing like a General Election - our representatives snap to attention. Chris Huhne - do your best, we need industry down here, we WERE known as an industrial town, but anyway just having the boats using our Port is something - keep going and don't forget us when or if you gain the heights of the the BIG job in Parliement.

the way to look at this is :- share the work out around the country, give every one a chance off employment. it will help southampton out by lessing the traffic. Chris Huhne needs to remember southampton docks got a lot off help in money and land when it was a nationalise dock, and liverpool did't it was left to die slowly.
southampton docks can stand on its own two feet, and not worry aout liverpool. if liverpool takes the cruise shipping away from southampton, this could be a good thing, it will give more room for the container port to expand into the western docks, then southampton could then apply for money for this new container port thats going to some where along the coast from the severn to the thames. one thing for sure we not going to have both it be one or the either.

Sound like who's afraid of the big bad wolf to me. Is Southampton really so scared of Liverpool. Liverpool had a great reputation for the import of slaves. If they want to import fat idle people on cruse ships they will just be keeping the tradition going.

I find myself agreeing with you. The Dibden Bay problem would be solved. Every cloud has a silver lining. Also, introducing some competition into the cruise market would be good for customers.

I dont have an issue sharing work=prosperity around the Country but i dont agree that Southampton could or would want to lose the cruise industry. The recession i feel has been felt less in Southampton due to the cruise ships visiting here. If not just with the passengers then certainly with people that visit the city to see the liners.
.
In addition to extend the containers along the western docks would only make the waterfront area resemble some rust bucket dumping ground with a multitude of containers.

I am absolutely appalled at the level of bigotry shown by people from Southampton. Small-minded comments don’t do the people of Southampton any justice. It's no wonder Liverpudians look down their nose at Southampton when certain people express such narrow-minded views.

You are quite right sir.
Such comments are not appropriate to the debate, the point of which most people seem to have missed.
It's all about FAIR competition. I'm sure Liverpool is a great place to join a cruise but why should UK and EC grants be given to provide a facility in one area but not another. The south, generally, gets very little support from Central Govt and non at all from the EC.
Unfortunately the bigotry is not just one way. If you look at the comments pages of the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo you will see similar juvenile posts made against people from the south regarding this story.

i totally agree with you, there is no need for rudeness, but you find its not the ordinary people of southampton making those comments, but those who think they are better than any one else.

What an odd statement to make. I presume this poster doesnt have a job otherwise whats to say his job could glibly be transferred to another part of the country or somewhere else in the EU
I think the poster is unaware that Liverpool Docks (ie the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board) was under Government control for many years, including the period when Seaforth Container Terminal was constructed.
So Govt aid to Liverpool Docks is not new
It was the Govt who then transferred their ownership into the private MDHC (retaining a large number of shares) before finally selling off to Peel Ports about 5 years ago

southy says...

phil liverpool docks was never nationlised, the owners before peel took over was mersey docks and harbour company, and they used there own funds, to the south of the pier it was run by the waterway board. and was left to run down.

southy says...
3:08pm Mon 2 Nov 09

also phil the MDHC have owned liverpool dock's since 1858, and have always used there own money for building work, that was till peel bought in to the company and took over, they had a govenment load for the container port, and the government did control it till the load was paid in full, whitch was paid back in full, there was no grants, or any type of free money, till after peel took over.

and has if i had a job working the passenger liners, and it moved to liverpool, then i might move with the job to, if i wanted to keep my job.

Southy
Only partly right
It was the Mersey Docks & Harbour BOARD (MDHB) which took over from Liverpool Corporation in 1858
In the 1960's the MDLB had to be bailed out by the Govt as it was losing money hand over fist. So the Govt put in public funds to keep the company operational ie State Aid
In 1971 there was an Act of Parliament (Mersey Docks & Harbour Act)which allowed the Govt to put the company on the Stock Market.
The company name changed to the Mersey Docks and Harbour COMPANY (MDHC) The Govt kept a 20% stake until 1998 when it sold it for £70m
Peel Holdings subsequently bought MDHC, which by then included Clydeport, Heysham and Sheerness/Chatham for £1.4b

southy says...

that was because they never paid the loan in full by the date given, the government had 47% of the shares, when it was put on the stock market, it was bought up by the dockers, putting mdhb back in control. but because the docks was not nationalised they had to pay for every thing, loans was even paid back. theres a bit more it i know, but i just trying to give the basics.
any way ben what do you think, one or the other whitch would you pick container business or passenger liners business.

phil maccavity says...

It is absolute nonsense to say the Dockers bought Liverpool Docks.
Most of them were sacked because of continuing Dock Labour disputes and this is why the Govt at the time had to step in to keep Liverpool Docks going
Show me one shread of evidence to support this laughable claim.
If you had worked in Liverpool during this period you would have a proper view of the circunmstances

We tend to have the usual banter down here with our Pompey cousins along the coast. It does get tedious although I have often joined in with some tongue in cheek skate-bashing.

Liverpool is a fine city but once you leave the riverside and city centre areas you are faced with an urban jungle with high criminality. The 'facilities' are fairly central and the Scousers are mostly friendly although having a constant chip on their shoulder. 'Culture'? Apart from the slave trade (shared with Bristol) I think you'll find that football (yawn) the Beatles and former shipping connections sum it all up?

Scouse-stereotyping will never go away so they better just put up with the usual 'thieving' labels as it is ingrained.

I quite like Liverpool and I think most Sotonians have an affection for our fomer sister docks but times have changed. We both wish to preserve our own heritage and our status as a cruise port is no surprise due to the facilities, tides and southern location.

Scouse banter is usually reserved for the mancs. I agree it can be tedious at times though. I don't agree with 'Urban Jungle' comment. There are run down areas in L,pool, like there are in Southampton. However, there are plenty of leafy affluent areas in the city area as well. Many events take place outside the city centre such as food&drink festivals, tennis tournaments, Golf tournaments etc. There are some great beaches such as Formby, and fantastic Victorian parks (Sefton park, Stanley park for example).
Liverpool also had a very successful 'European Capital of Culture 2008', which was described by the EU as the most successful ever.
Liverpool did benefit from the slave trade, but so did most parts of the country. Many of the stately homes and country manors were built on the back of the slave trade. Cotton that made Manchester rich was picked by slaves in the West Indies.
I feel strongly that people should not 'just put up with' any form unjust stereotyping.
It's amazing me how much people know about L,pool who are not from the city, or who have never been there.
If you asked people around the country to list things they know about Southampton. What would they say?????
