THEY were facing an uphill struggle trying to get the new gear they needed to open up opportunities to young people.
But now members of Itchen South Mountain Team in Southampton are feeling on top of the world thanks to the Daily Echo.
The club had been finding it hard to raise the cash it needed to create an equipment pool that could be used by new members for hill and mountain-climbing trips.
We teamed up with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation to dish out £40,000 to community groups and sports teams who needed a financial boost.
And £610 of our Great £40,000 Community Cash Giveaway money has gone to the mountain club, meaning it now has the money it needs to buy the badly-needed new kit.
“We provide a first experience for young people by taking around 100 kids on expeditions in this country and abroad over the year,” said vice chair Donna Tew.
“But the problem we’re having more and more is people just can’t afford the gear, and trying to borrow it has been difficult.
“So we came up with the idea of kit bank that can be used by everyone, and the grant will let us do that now, which is fantastic.”
