Staff injured after fire at John Lewis in Southampton

FOURTEEN people have been injured during a fire at a Hampshire department store.

Shoppers and staff were evacuated from John Lewis in Southampton's WestQuay Shopping Centre for around an hour after the incident in a kitchen.

Paramedics have treated 13 people for smoke inhalation problems, while a woman is also understood to have suffered a fracture after slipping on stairs during the evacuation.

Fire crews were called to the scene shortly after midday, but staff had already managed to extinguish the fire by the time the eight officers from St Mary's had arrived.

It is understood all the injured people work at the flagship department store.

I do hope the person is okay, poor John Lewis looks like a lawsuit is coming.

Eight of the 'shoppers' probably knew nothing about the fire until the kitchen staff overtook them on the stairs. What's the expression? 'Where there's a blame, there's a claim'

Have you been on the Sherbet dips again Derek?

The store and staff dealt efficiently with the incident by following set procedures.
From what I hear – which is from people who witnessed the whole drama – it was the attitude and arrogance of certain customers that compounded the problem.
Still, some will still try to create a crisis out of a drama.

Here Here Big Mac,
as a loyal Customer and witness
Its amazing what the press will tell you. Knowone was injured in the incident, a few people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and there was a report of someone falling over on the wet ground outside. nothing else.
The heroic staff who tackled the fire are a true credit to the John Lewis brand and definatley stopped a major incident occuring.
All of the staff we encountered showed huge professionalism and safely asked for people to leave, escorting them at every oppertunity.

And as for "Derek" and your comment "Eight of the 'shoppers' probably knew nothing about the fire until the kitchen staff overtook them on the stairs."
The alarm system sounded and we were all escorted safely from the building...the staff were the last to leave, and that to me shows customer service above and beyond the call of duty.
well done to all the John Lewis staff and there Security / Emergency team who dealt with the situation so well....many would of buckled under the pressure.

I also agree with "Big Mac" the press are not always right.People were treated for smoke inhalation and that was it , unfortunately one person did fall and hurt there back not "Fracture" and that was just a accident as it was wet!!!not a fault of John Lewis.
Derek it is people like your self who make society the way it is ,trying to shift the blame on too others and earn a quick buck.
I would also like to say a big well done to John Lewis for reacting quickly to the situation and helping us to leave the store !!!

What was that other expression I used to hear? When the going gets tough, the Tough go shopping...... and they all witnessed todays event by the sound of it!!!!!

Derek were you there at the time?

No, I dont think you were. The other 2 persons who have commented including myself were in John Lewis at the time by the sounds of it.

Are you really surprised that people comment on this story because they were involved.

Its just a shame that you feel compelled to make daft comments when a flagship store in the south did so well to protect staff and customers in an Emergency situation.

I for one feel alot safer shopping in John Lewis knowing that the staff know what to do in an emergency.

I do not think Derek has been on sherbet dips, as with any other incident in this country the "no win no fee" brigade will jump on it. This is the cause of all HSE problems in the UK

I had a jumper given to me from John Lewis. It didn't fit, but I had no problem exchanging it for one of the correct size.
