FedEx van almost demolishes house in Totton

A HOUSE was left on the verge of collapse after a mail van smashed into the building while the owners were busy wrapping Christmas presents.

The FedEx van came off the road, veered across a grass verge, and impaled itself into the detached house in Totton rocking a neighbouring home.

Watch manager Rob Burns from Redbridge fire station said: "The whole side of the building was cracked up to the roof. It looked like it was about to collapse. We were stood there watching the gaps getting bigger."

The van was left propping up the house in Warren Place.

A police spokesman said the occupants, a man and woman, thought to be in their 50s, were "shaken but not injured".

Mr Burns added: "They wanted to go back inside to get their Christmas presents but would couldn't let them in because it look like [the house] was going to fall down."

It is thought road conditions may have contributed to the collision. Four men were in the van at the time. One of them received facial injuries.

An ambulance spokeswoman said two were taken to Southampton General Hospital A 28-year-old from Copythorne was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He is being held in custody.

The crash happened at 9.30pm last night.

Part of adjoining Calmore Drive has been closed by the highway authority pending an assessment of the damage by a structural engineer.

Ten firefighters from Redbridge and Totton attended the incident.

This accident was in Calmore drive.

It looks like the van crossed the oncoming traffic, over the pavement, up the grassed verge and into the side of the house.

Whilst the ice obviously was the main reason for the accident I'd also question the speed of the van.

It is very common for motorists to speed along this stretch of road, which runs near the local Schools. It has become a rat run.

I have pointed this out to the Council but they refuse to do anything about it.

How long before someone dies?

It says a man was arrested for drink driving, therein lies your answer....alcohol and severe weather conditions - a lethal combination and it's a miracle no-one was killed!

Yes, I didn't read that before, I don't know if it's been added to the story?

It sounds like they'd just come out of the Saxon Inn nearby.

It's a straight piece of road and to get a van of that size (It's one on the LWB ones) up onto the pavement and over the grass it must have been goint at a fair old lick.

I'd also question whether this van was rated for four people sat i the front.

I'd be interested to hear a quote from Fed-Ex on this matter

Fed-Ex operate Franchises which in turn sub contract to owner drivers who have their vehicles sign-written with Fed-Ex livery. The sub-contractors often operate more than one vehicle so they in turn sub-contract to self-employed drivers....the whole scenario can get messy! This sounds as if the vehicle was being operated on behalf of an owner driver by a self-employed driver as I'm pretty sure that an owner driver wouldn't jeopardise his contract with the Fed-Ex franchisee by drink driving or carrying excessive passengers.

I live in warren place and saw the aftermath, idiots like the driver giving 4 people a lift to another pub while he himself was well over the limit and speeding proves people still dont get drink-drive and road conditions.
Im only sorry that the damge to the drivers side of van didnt cause him more serious injury as the family in that house will suffer for the rest of their lives now from his stupidity.
Christmas ruined and i hope they can get their personal belongings out before the house falls down, such a shame.

I see that it is a FedEX vehicle and the driver has, amongst other offences ,been charged with having no licence. I thought that any firm employing a driver was duty bound to examine the driving licence of the employee. I can see a big civil claim being made against both the driver and the firm as well as the criminal proceedings.

I feel for the family who have lost their home now, especially at xmas. I hope they get sent down for a very long time and pick up the costs for repairing the house and certainly not be allowed behind the wheel of a vehicle ever again.
