Tories axe Cabinet post as Terry quits

TORY council leaders in Southampton have axed a £16,739 a year Cabinet post after a councillor quit the role due to ill health.

Councillor Terry Matthews, pictured, resigned from his role with the responsibility for young persons and skills.

He was previously tasked with vetting council appointments.

His responsibilities have been handed to two of the city’s youngest politicians, councillors Paul Holmes and Ben Walker, who are already in charge of the city’s schools, colleges and child protection.

Cllr Matthews will continue his work as a ward councillor for Shirley.

Council leader Alec Samuels said: “He has served the city well. He has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of the staff.

The young people of the city have every reason to be grateful to him for the energy, commitment, experience and wisdom that he has brought to maintaining and improving facilities for the young people.”

Sad for Terry but good that the council are realising that this cabinet is a complete waste of money- something brought in by the Labour party designed to subsidise their members who on the whole weren't setting the world of employment alight.

I would like to say a big thank you to Terry Matthews. He is one of the unsung heroes of the city. He has always put others before himself with many years working very actively and for long and unsocial hours with little or no recompense as the trade union secretary at British Gas. When retired he transferred all that energy into his ward in Shirley; again putting his constituents before his own domestic life. The folk of both Shirley and at British Gas owe a huge debt of gratitude to this very modest man. Good luck to you Terry.
