TORY council leaders in Southampton have axed a £16,739 a year Cabinet post after a councillor quit the role due to ill health.

Councillor Terry Matthews, pictured, resigned from his role with the responsibility for young persons and skills.

He was previously tasked with vetting council appointments.

His responsibilities have been handed to two of the city’s youngest politicians, councillors Paul Holmes and Ben Walker, who are already in charge of the city’s schools, colleges and child protection.

Cllr Matthews will continue his work as a ward councillor for Shirley.

Council leader Alec Samuels said: “He has served the city well. He has always taken a keen interest in the welfare of the staff.

The young people of the city have every reason to be grateful to him for the energy, commitment, experience and wisdom that he has brought to maintaining and improving facilities for the young people.”
