TORY council chiefs in Southampton have agreed to buy four new cremators and mercury abatement facilities to reduce the amount of pollution the city’s crematorium emits.
They will use £85 out of a £150 hike in cremation fees brought in earlier this year to pay for them.
Funeral directors and opposition councillors criticised the rise in the estimated cost between £3m and £6m.
The council will be asked to sign off the scheme on January 20.
