POLICE investigating an incident that claimed the life of a pensioner believe that passing motorists could hold vital evidence.
Officers are keen to trace the occupants of a vehicle in the area at the time of the incident in which Richard Ansty was killed.
Mr Ansty, 69, died as a result of the injuries he suffered after he was hit by a silver Peugeot 206 while he was walking along The Avenue.
The driver, an 18-year-old Southampton man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until April 20.
Police now want to trace a small dark-coloured hatchback-style vehicle that pulled on to The Avenue from Bannister Road before driving into the car park of the Elizabeth House Hotel shortly after the incident at about 9pm on January 18.
Mr Ansty, a lifelong Saints fan, of Padwell Road, Southampton, had just got off a Solent Blueline bus in Lodge Road when the incident happened.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Operation Volume team on 101.
Callers can also use the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.
