£23m bid to find 'safe' cigarettes

BRITISH American Tobacco is investing £23m into its Southampton base in a bid to develop a “safe” cigarette.

On national No Smoking Day, the Daily Echo can reveal that the company now employs more people in the city than when it made billions of cigarettes a year.

It means Southampton is now home to one of the world’s leading smoking research centres, which is currently examining 40 different varieties of safer cigarettes.

Bosses say they are committed to the city long-term.

But critics have described the work being done at the plant as “tinkering” and say it will still leave a product that causes serious health problems.

If this was facebook I would click 'Like'

Anyway... BAT spend 23M on finding/making this so called safe ciggy. But it's gonna hike the price up of them making normal ciggys the cheaper option. I know what I would choose.

The fact is BAT are drug pushers - legal maybe, but global drug pushers all the same. The tobacco industry (including BAT) has known for decades the damage their product does to human health, and they have spent most of this time trying to deny it. Despite the employment they provide they are certainly NOT a company we should be proud to associate with this city.
"Safe" cigarettes? Do me a favour. It’s just another industry attempt at trying to project a positive image to counter the truth of the product they push - a highly addictive product that kills people prematurely.

apart from i do not smoke the stuff, hemp is a lot safer than some of your legal forms of drugs. like tobacco and alcohol and is not addictive. there is a lot of bs that surrounds hemp and it is also not a drug that makes you aggressive unlike alcohol can make people very aggressive, hemp is more of a pacifier.

Frivolously, southy, may I ask why you smoke dangerous tobacco and not safer hemp?
Is this not an illogical position to take?

Freefinker-BAT produce and sell legal tobacco products to adults who have the freedom to make an informed decison on whether or not they choose to smoke.Surely looking for a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes is a responsible thing to do?
In terms of creating employment, I wonder how many people currently employed by BAT and earning a good living for themselves and their families would agree with your comments- very principled I'm sure, but as we know, principles don't pay the bills!Clearly the government does not share these principles, as tobacco taxes pay for roughly half the defence budget!

native americans smoke pure tobacco has in rolls ups how many of them suffer from cancer though smoking pure tobacco, it a very low % to those that smoke taylor fags, sulphur is the big problem in tobacco.

But tobacco is still a dangerous and life-threatening addictive drug. And the tobacco industry (including BAT) is still irresponsibly pushing their drug into new markets where there was no previous tradition of tobacco consumption - China and other developing countries for example.
Knowing full well the dangers of this product, as they do, this is a totally irresponsible activity.
And if you are taken in by this “safer” nonsense then you are surely very gullible, or connected with the industry or their paid-for lobby groups – as the standard wording you use tends to make me believe. Safe tobacco a PR smokescreen (pun intended)
“Half the defence budget” you say, hum, perhaps you would like to inform us of the costs to the NHS, to the days lost to employment due to illness, to the suffering of those who have lost a dear one prematurely, etc, etc, ad infinitum.
And as for “BAT produce and sell legal tobacco products to adults who have the freedom to make an informed decision on whether or not they choose to smoke” – don’t make me laugh! Their advertising, worldwide, is ALWAYS aimed at the young. Why? – because the product is an addictive drug, the young are gullible and receptive to their cleaver marketing, and once you’ve got them hooked you have secured years of future sales.
Apart from the anomaly that this drug is legal, tobacco companies are morally no better than smack dealers.

BAT cannot be a bad company. They pay the workers well, and used to run a social club.

they are so considerate to the community that I think of them as a big caring daddy.

I want to take up smoking now. Those guys wouldn't do us harm, would they?

If people want to exercise their right to smoke and pay £5 a time for the priviledge then good for them.
