Police quiz for fans after appeal to identify Southampton and Portsmouth fans

POLICE were today interviewing a number of suspects who have handed themselves in following an appeal to find those responsible for violent scenes after the recent FA Cup derby match between Southampton and Portsmouth.

Four men contacted police following the front page appeal in yesterday’s Daily Echo after police released pictures of people they wanted to speak to in connection with the inquiry.

Officers have reiterated their message for the remaining people to hand themselves in before they are identified by the police, and get a knock at their door.

Police filmed an angry mob of Saints supporters as they streamed out of St Mary’s following their side’s 4-1 defeat to their south coast rivals.

Click here to see all the fans police are still looking for.

Trouble flared at the Freeborn Motors garage at Britannia Road when the fans threw missiles, taunted Portsmouth fans and threatened police while causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Officers investigating the violent scenes, codenamed Operation Austen, are also calling on the public to call in if they recognise any of the faces that can still be viewed at dailyecho.co.uk.

To help the inquiry call Hampshire police on 0845 045 4545.

4 down 6 to go, looking at how clear the photo's are the other 6 may as well give themselves up as well.

If they are Saints fans, I reckon they will get nicked at tomorrow's game anyway.

That video shows nothing more than a load of people running around. A couple of things being thrown.

Big deal.

In my opinion, setup by the police anyway to get as many arrests as possible. Nothing happened of note, couple of stones thrown ( most of which came from the skates first ) , there is going to be about 50 arrests over nothing. West Ham v Millwall had less than half that amount.

It is called a police state for a reason, you cannot even question the police actions today without an instant fine, who wants to be a policeman anyway power hungry **** looking for an excuse to excercise draconian powers becuase they where bullied at school

I doubt that they will be found to be Saints fans, just yobs taking the opportunity for a bit of bother.
It is rarely the football fans that cause trouble.

I wonder how they got the stones, when they were being herded by the police.

more to the point what are they doing rushing down to the other end of the ground if it was not to cause trouble, any true fan would of just gone home or do what ever they had to do for the rest of the day. and not get down to the other end just has the pompey fans are coming out.
if this sort of thing carry on happening then you know whats going to happen saints will be banned from playing abroad.

If they were being herded down the road, with police surrounding them, I just wondered whether the police allowed them to stop and pick up stones or had a delivery of stones been dumped on the road?

There are aggregate and gravel stores all up and down the road RIGHT OPPOSITE the stadium. A proper town planner's decision would have taken this into account. I've always said that the stadium would have been better off at Stoneham. There could have been a junction 6 off the M27, straight into the car park, like at Fleet services, and people coming in on trains could have got off at Southampton Parkway and had one Policed road to walk up bordered by fields and bushes. Nothing to destroy there. But, I reckon some rich a**holes knew someone on the planning commitee and roared the usual NOT IN MY BACK YARD!! It was a ridiculous idea to put it in Northam.

What absolute rubbish is getting posted on here... How many of you were actualy at the game or just making it up? The stones came from the saints fans in freebourne who had put some stuff there pre-game everyone was talking about this in the bars after the game. The stones came back from the Pompy fans after they'd been thrown. The saints fans (or whoever) rushed to that end to start trouble. An elderly saints fan was hit by a block of concrete and needed to go to hospital and a load of cars were trashed so I kinda think it is quite appropriate to arrest these people and show them for what they are - not saints fans.
Southy good point but I don't think banning saints playing abroad will be much of an issue just yet!!

Portsmouth fans have gone to matches pre armed with ammunition for decades. Saints fans will remember being kept behind at Fratton Park in the 80's after the game, as we waited on the terrace to be let out, Portsmouth fans started throwing bricks and breeze blocks over the low stand onto the heads of Saints fans, several had really bad injuries, the cops who had a clear vantage point could see who was doing this but waved the yobs away, and would not let the injured Saints fans out for treatment until the blues fans had left the area about 15 minutes later. Their fans clearly did not take this ammo into the ground, but left it behind the Milton End (away fans stand), knowing that we would be easy targets as we would be kept behind after the game.

So, who are we to believe?
Mooky9, who claims that there were piles of stones put in place pre-match, ready for battle or
Brite Spark, who thinks that Pompey fans filled their pockets with stones in Portsmouth.

This really is a tough one!

Yep. In all the violence, did they get hit with the ugly stick?

Never said that did I? I was reporting a historical incident you buffoon. Saints fans throw little stones, blues fans throw breeze blocks.

Jacka Storrie has stepped down by the way.

I ACTUALLY know Will Whale. He is a nice bloke, always has been, always will be. I used to be at school with him and he was always going places because he was always fair and reasonable. Mind you, I'm talking when the majority of teenagers were maybe a bit boisterous but we never hurt anyone. I think they call them the good old days.
