More Southampton fans walking to Wembley for Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final

More stories about: Southampton FC

WALKING from St Mary’s to Wembley stadium they could be forgiven for fancying a swift one before they set off on the journey.

The team of Saints fans trekking 120 miles to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy are holding a fundraising evening on March 20 to help toward their £5,000 target.

Raising cash for the Everyman charity the team will be raffling off a signed Saints shirt and the chance to win a signed match-ball from the final itself to be donated by organisers Johnstone’s Paint.

Yesterday we revealed that fans had recorded their own cup final song.

A silent auction is also being held for the special prize, a replica 1966 World Cup England away shirt signed by hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst. Revellers will also be entertained by music from Vulcan with the party expected to go long into the night.

The team will set off on the walk two days before the big match and complete the last 20-miles on the day of the game.

Glynn Root, 30, has organised the fundraising evening at the St Mary’s pub, he said: “We’re already halfway to the total and we really want to reach that £5,000 target and this is obviously going to help us towards that.”

The team taking on the trek is organiser Graham Harris alongside Brett Shepherd, David Foot, Glynn Root, Tim Patston, Gary Pompa, Ray Mead, Wilson Massey, Tony Dyke and Daimon Brown.

What a cracking song for the Saints!!I listened to it all the way through and thought it brilliant.
I hope it can get some plays on local radio or even TV albeit I doubt the latter since Fred D might have something to say about that.

Reminds me of the sponsored walk we did in May 1994 from The Dell to Upton Park - via Old Trafford - for the last game of that season.

Great song, sounds like it was written by the 'Not the 9 O clock News' team!

The song is called 'Paint the Town Red Tonight' - is this a Saints tribute song or is it aimed at the trophy sponsors?
