Southampton's Sea City Museum approved

More stories about: Heritage Museum, Sea City Museum, Southampton City Council

SOUTHAMPTON'S plans for a £15m heritage museum have today been given the green light.

Planning bosses at the City Council gave the thumbs up to the ambitious proposals, which will see the most radical redevelopment in the 78- year history of the Civic Centre.

It comes a day after conservation experts at English Heritage added their blessing to the scheme, which includes a new exhibition centre, a roof extension and a remodelled entrance.

Campaigners fighting the proposal have said it would spoil the original design of the Grade II-listed building.

But members of Southampton City Council's Planning and Rights of Way Panel this morning voted five to two in favour of the project.

Last month, the council ditched plans to sell two pieces of art from its overflowing collection to help pay for the Sea City Museum.

Southampton's financial chiefs are hoping to cover the funding shortfall by allowing Hampshire County Council to invest in its art collection.

Sea City Museum is set to open in April 2012 on the centenary of the Titanic's sinking.

I hope it's good...how much memorabilia from the Titanic is actually going to be in there? I know there are other titanic museum around the world...how will this compare?

"Southampton’s financial chiefs are hoping to cover the funding shortfall by allowing Hampshire County Council to invest in its art collection"

I wish John Hannides would explain to me how Hampshire County Council is going to invest in our art collection?

Is it sponsorship? Are we renting out bits of our art collection to Hampshire?

Also who did the council consult with? as the report said it did.

Well the museum that has titanic things in at the moment is awful!!!
My great gran was the oldest living survivor and we went to the one in florida and it was AMAZING there was a massive decking area which looked like it was on the side of the ship with stars and it was freezing to resemble the night itself, It had the grand stair case the guides were dressed up as if they were on the ship and really liked there job. I can see SCC doing a pretty bad job of it if im honest. I should do it id make it unforgettable.

There does not seem to be any mention of how many flats will be incorporated into this development. I think we need to be informed Daily Echo !

What an eyesore!

For the amount of money mentioned, we could have a proper purpose-built museum.

Why do we always have to put up with make-do solutions?

What is needed is a Southampton heritage centre, instead of scattered museums (e.g. archaeology, maritime, and aircraft).

All we seem to get are short-sighted attractions done on the cheap. It's not as though these museums are free to visit. Thatcher's government imposed admission fees on Britain's museums, many of which are now free. After all, children's museum visits are educational.

Perhaps it's just tory dogma in action, where nothing is free.

£15m?
That's a hell of a lot to pay for a 'white elephant'!

I agree with Southy! If it is to be a museum with a 'Titanic' theme, it needs to be situated nearer the docks.

That is a very good question, and I believe the public are entitled to know the reality of the answer to that. Hopefully the City Council will adequately clarify this. All I can say is, from my personal experience of having worked with Southampton City Council Collections in the not too distant past, there were very few items indeed from the RMS Titanic, her crew and passengers, actually possessed by the city council when I was there. I have no reason to believe that that situation has changed significantly at any rate, in more recent times. However, some items may well be borrowed from other sources for the new exhibition. Anyway, the absence of items from the ship etc herself, will not neccessarily mean that the new exhibitions will not be a success and well worth a visit. There are many different ways, eg, with present day technology, that a story like that of the RMS Titanic's can be impressively presented. However, potential visitors and indeed local tax payers, should be aware of this.

May we know the names of the 2 who voted against this? And by whom's behest. Nobody has asked my opinion on this and I thought Councillors were meant to represent us, the citizens/voters?

Sorry - just re-read the article and seen it was not councillors but planning bosses who voted. Still begs the question - who are these "Planning Bosses"?

I'd like to add my support to the notion that this should be near the docks. Mind you it comes as no surprise that the intention is to pour yet more money into the top end of the city, the bottom end of town has been systematically killed by the council over the past ten or fifteen years leaving high numbers of empty buildings and closed businesses.

You can find out by asking in the Civic Centre for the minutes of the meeting when they are published.
It was two lady Councillors but I do not know the names of both of them.
I think that "planning bosses" means that the report written by the Planning Officers supported the proposal. ( or can someone correct me ? )
It makes me laugh that objections are called "representations" so it sounds as if no one was really against it, similar to Concerns for complaints and Issues for problems, typical Council-Government speak to dumb down opposition to anything.
But we voters are not so dumb !

There are warehouses full of stuff that should be on public exhibition, it's just that the council lacks the space for a substantial museum.

Excellent posts Southy and Linesman.

Surely...the "Titanic Museum" should be nearer the docks or Mayflower Park. It's proof again that I some Council Officials haven't a clue. What a silly decision. They have wasted another opportunity.

If my memory serves me well which is a rare thing these days, I do believe there is a hotel or pub in Whitby where the restraunt is made as a perfect replica of one of Titanic's restraunts from the same wood and fittings by the same craftsmen, I would visit that if it was in Southampton.
