A £300,000 project to build new changing rooms for sports teams at South Wonston Recreation Ground has taken a major step forward.
Winchester planning officers have approved a scheme for a new building to house four team dressing rooms, showers and a public toilet to accommodate other users of the recreation ground.
The old wooden pavilion will remain as a community meeting room.
There were no formal objections to the plans.
The bid for better facilities was sparked when a men’s football team had to disband after a local league condemned the dressing rooms in the old pavilion.
It is hoped that The Football Foundation may contribute up to £200,000 to kick-start the scheme.
The parish council aims to find the rest of the money by grant applications to other bodies and a community fundraising campaign.
