Plans for Southampton’s Itchen Waterfront waved through

PLANS to breathe new life in to an historic part of Southampton’s waterfront have been waved through.

Councillors unanimously approved proposals to regenerate Itchen ferry foreshore and beach, resurface and lengthen the dilapidated slipway and install a new flood barrier.

The £50,000 scheme would also see the foreshore wall upgraded, the addition of street furniture and improvements to the memorial garden off Hazel Road. Once funding is secured, work is set to take place to clean the beach area above the high water mark and reseed habitat areas.

Meanwhile an adjacent bank of shingle, created by propeller wash from passing ships, is due to be levelled out.

The site has operated as a strategic location for river crossing since before the Middle Ages, but in more recent times became famous for its chain driven floating bridge. Since the construction of the Itchen Bridge, the land has been predominantly used for recreational activity.

Councillors gave their full backing to the regeneration project, a joint venture between Groundwork Solent, the City Parks and Cleansing Department and Southampton Amateur Rowing Club.

It was given the green light at the city council’s Planning and Rights of Way Panel. Cllr Carol Cunio said: “This is a treasured area because it is one of the few places we can get to the water and I would fully support this community led project.”

A Public Viewing of Plans and Photographs is to be held at Southampton Amateur Rowing Club, Hazel Road, Woolston, on Saturday between 10am and 1pm.

An excellent idea, the city has miles of coast line and most in inaccessable.

“This is a treasured area because it is one of the few places we can get to the water and I would fully support this community led project.” So says a councillor...

The word "transform" is also used, but the reality is that the £50,000 cost, whilst commendable, is a pittance, certainly in respect of what it will provide and compared with any other developments... and no doubt much of the effort will have to come from the community, so the council's contribution is derisory.

At the same time many millions have been spent on Ocean Village, millions more will be spent on te former Vosper site, and and development of the Town Quay/Royal pier area. But these areas are, or will be dominated by apartment blocks, effectively denying access to that same water the councillor lauds. And it is this same council that is encouraging, permitting and overseeing these developments.

One the one hand, her comment is verging on the breathtakingly hypocritical, and on the other hand highlights the demise of Southampton's waterfront heritage.

So sad!!

Very well said FM. Is there any chance at all that some kind of public promenade could be built along the front of the former VT site? Once that place has been re developed it would be nice to have access to that area, particularly if it could be livened up with a couple of bars and restaraunts as opposed to flats and yet more flats?

It's a shame that the floating bridge couldn't be returned or perhaps a foot passenger ferry?

£50,000?

Not exactly 'splashing the cash'!

It would appear that there are areas of the city where money is lavished while other areas 'get the crumbs from the table.!

The money is small but Groundwork Solent will probably use that money to generate more funding for elsewhere, they have done that on other projects in Southampton

the area they are talking about is woolston public boatyard, public hard and public slipway. this really should be left to the locals to decide on what happens here more so the people who keeps there boats at this location. the people who have boats there should have first and last say over the matter, they are the ones who use it the most.

Looks like the slipway is going to be improved Southy so that will please the boaties, the rest of the public should have access to the littoral area as well.

true brite, but remember this slip way is not the type that you reverse a car down, its only for those hand type boat trailers, the original public slip way is under the concrete where they built those flats.

Whatever happened to the Itchen St. Deny's to Northam boardwalk?

The Southampton Council's Press Release Archive, on their website, shows:
November 2008 Press Releases
Connecting Southampton for walkers and cyclists
07/11/2008, and includes the statement:
This agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, confirms partners continued commitment to build a unique boardwalk along part of the tidal River Itchen between Northam Bridge and Horseshoe Bridge. Work on the boardwalk is now planned to start in April 2009 with the opening pencilled in for October that year.

This work has not been started yet.

An update from the Council would be welcome.

I believe the Boardwalk between Northam Bridge and Horseshoe Bridge is due to begin soon. It was mentioned in the last issue sof City View, so has not completely fallen off the agenda.

The community/public have and will be consulted at every level, that's the way it work's now Southy, any changes to do with parks, open spaces, common's and alike will need public backing and support, that the way the council do it these days

Any thing that is done to improve the visual aspect and conditions along the Itchen has to be applauded take a look through riverside park if that continues all the way to the towns water front then this would be a great heritage for the city and something other city's don't have. so lets stop the negative comments and look to the positive everything starts of small then grows and I'm sure this will too no matter how many years it takes. We with help from the City's rangers are making great steps in inproving the outlook at Mansbridge that is very close to the river itchen and with the itchen navigation project as well it will all one day tie together...

They should get the community service scum bags to clean all the stones with a toothbrush

The community service scum bags (as you call them) have done Weston Shore numerous times, I think the scum bags who drop the rubbish should clear the own mess up once in a while

Like the fluoride there appears to be a total 'blank' as to what the public need or want - In the matter of an open space to the waters you lot show yourselves up in your true colours - dictatorship and arrogance. I agree with FM what is it with you plotters and planners? in our minds we know you are in it for yourselves - you, the plotters, are the lowest of the low - you, with everything political are considered as the lowest - we have no respect for you and I believe in the annuals of time you will be deemed as a governing disgrace. You, and the political fraternity can only be judged by your actions, and your names will forever be imprinted in our minds and we will not let you get away with it without retaliation.

Our council should take a trip to Cardiff or Bristol if they want to see how a proper city makes good use of its waterfronts.

Or, dare I say it, Portsmouth! It might not be as good as Bristol but it certainly knocks Southampton intio a cocked hat!
