SOUTHAMPTON Running Club are gearing up for the 17th National Masters Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Without doubt, the blue riband event of the meeting is the men's over-40 relay, run over eight legs of five kilometres.

In recent years Ron Hill Cambuslaing, comprising virtually the whole Scottish national squad, have dominated, but a lot of the larger city clubs traditionally put in a fierce challenge on the demanding Midlands course.

Southampton RC are sending teams of over-40 and over-50 men, hoping to improve on last year's finishes of 36th (out of 85) and 16th (out of 60) respectively.

With minimal injuries and late withdrawals anticipated, Southampton's younger men are hopeful of a top-25 position, while the over-50s are aiming for top ten.

Squads - Over-50s: Richard Walley, Martyn West, Ian Richardson, Mike Smith, Neil Hotson, Alan Rushton.

Over-40s: Jon Grainger, Peter Costley, Phil Desborough, Rob Thomson, John Withey, Ian Whitcher, Ian Crawford.
