Thornden School are celebrating the success of two boys teams in the Badminton Association of England's Top Schools Championship.

Both teams qualified despite tough competition in the regional rounds against schools from Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey and Essex.

In the national finals held in Luton the Under 14 team of James Taylor, Nick Ward, Sam Newbold, John Wainwright and Sam Nugent took the silver medals.

The boys gave their all to knock out the favourites, Haberdasher's Aske, in the semis, only to be defeated in the final by Silverdale from Sheffield.

The Under 16 team of Adam Rickenbach, Matt Branford, David Cole, Arun Pone and Alex Ward came tenth. A special mention goes to number one player Richenbach, who won every one of his singles games - a remarkable feat against the best singles players in the competition and a record for Thornden.

Earlier in the season, Thornden had performed strongly in the District interschools competitions at Westgate in Winchester.

John Wainwright won the Under 14 singles, while Amandeep Dhillon and Matt Wisby won the U14 Doubles.

In the Under 16s Doubles Competition, Thornden took all the trophies. These were for Boys, Girls and Mixed pairs: Well done to Matt Branford and John Wainwright, Lyn Liu and Sam Aplin, Dave Cole and Lucy Dunkley.
