AN EXHIBITION celebrating Southampton's connection with the sea has been launched at the city's Maritime Museum.

Associated British Ports director Doug Morrison joined friends of the museum, staff and local VIPs to open the new Life At Sea display, which forms part of Southampton's contribution to the Sea Britain celebrations, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Among the priceless treasures on display is a recently discovered letter written by a seaman at the famous battle of 1805, in which Admiral Lord Nelson died.

Other items include a fisherman's whale tooth chess set and a walrus tusk.

The Maritime Museum which is on the corner of Bugle Street and Town Quay Road, is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Admission is free.
