ENGLAND opener Marcus Trescothick has hit back at criticisms of him last week by Hampshire skipper Shane Warne.

The Australian leg-spinner said the Somerset man might benefit from returning to county cricket for a spell, saying his technique had been found out at Test level.

But Trescothick said last night: "Warne's comments came from nowhere.

"I read his remarks and thought 'fair enough - he's made his mind up and he's entitled to his opinion.'

"But I'm not going to let it bother me at all.

"It might have bugged me for about five or ten minutes, but that's all.

"Opening the batting in Test cricket is a tough enough job without worrying about people giving you grief.

"We don't play Australia again for another year, so I won't be carrying the cutting around with me as extra motivation.

"Right now, I'm more cheesed off I broke my favourite bat in the C&G Trophy at Worcestershire last weekend.

"I was trying to hit a six over mid-wicket and caught it on the toe-end of the bat."

Trescothick is set to open the batting for England tomorrow in the second npower Test against New Zealand at Headingley, with fit-again captain Michael Vaughan filling the void left by Nasser Hussain's retirement at number four.
