SOUTHAMPTON'S first IT suite in a tower block has been unveiled. It's at Sturminster House in Maybush.

Funding from the Outer Shirley Regeneration programme has been used to establish the UK Online Centre, which will provide all 300 residents at the tower block with free access to computers, the Internet and e-mail.

The centre has been developed inside the former drying room to enable residents to improve their IT skills and become confident in using computers, following research which identified that public access to IT in the Outer Shirley area amounts to only one computer per 200 residents.

The new centre will be staffed by volunteer Business Studies students from Southampton Institute and the Outer Shirley Regeneration programme.

Cllr Liz Mizon said: "This new IT drop-in Centre will be on the doorstep for residents in Sturminster House, and I hope it will prove popular and enable more people to get to grips with and become confident in using IT - whether to help them to get a better job, order their weekly shopping online, help their children with their homework or e-mail their relatives in Australia!"
