Ofsted inspectors almost ran out of superlatives when they compiled their report on Sun Hill Infant School, Alresford.

In the four-page summary alone, they use the word, "excellent", 17 times to describe different aspects of school life.

Lead inspector, Carole Skinner, said: "The school excelled in all areas. We have been unable to find any significant areas for improvement - the first time I have been able to give such a verdict on any school."

The team was particularly impressed by the high quality of teaching in an atmosphere of warmth and encouragement. This gave pupils a challenging and stimulating education whilst ensuring that the children were extremely courteous and well-behaved.

They praised Sun Hill's achievements in science, PE and special needs, which went hand-in-hand with very high academic standards.

The leadership of the head teacher, Kim Owen-Jones, was described as "outstanding".

She was well supported by key staff, the governors and parents who worked in close partnership with the teachers.

Ofsted concluded that the school was: "Well-placed to continue to improve and has an excellent capacity to succeed."

Mrs Owen-Jones, who has coped with eight staff changes in the past two years, said she was thrilled: " I feel very fortunate that, despite this being a difficult time for teacher recruitment, I have been able to build such a talented hard-working team.

"This report reflects the commitment that the whole school community has to the aims and values of Sun Hill and I feel very privileged to be working with such a fantastic group of people."

Chairman of governors, David Goodman, added: "We thought that, after our last Ofsted, we would have a challenge to maintain the standards it set, but Kim and her team have excelled themselves by achieving this truly outstanding result.

"Kim's leadership has inspired her young team to great heights."
