Maths students from Peter Symonds' College were thrilled to beat rivals, Winchester College and King Edward V1 School, in a Maths Problems Drive at Southampton University.

The 30 students were split into groups of five by staff from the university mathematics department and competed against teams from other Hampshire schools and colleges, both state and private.

The winning team from Symonds - Tom Close(captain), Charlotte Blythe, Steve Down, Yu Feng and Benjamin Hartley - scored 94 out of a possible 100.

Winchester College and King Edward VI tied for second place with 92 points.

Symonds' maths teacher, Kathy Claydon, said: "This suggests that maths is not a dying subject. As a college, we entered the most teams and, on the day, the best team won. I am very proud of them all - they all reached a very high standard."
