A COMMUNITY music project is hitting the right note for people of all ages across the outer Shirley area.

The Make Mine Music project at Redbridge Community School, which has received more than £79,000 from the Outer Shirley Regeneration Board, has just got off the ground.

It offers expert tuition for people of all ages in a variety of musical courses.

Kathryn Wiseman from the school said the project had been developed to increase local people's access to music.

"We set up the project to develop a community approach to music, something that we feel can provide a vehicle for many disadvantaged people to participate in and which will help to raise confidence and create a cohesive community.

"We have tried to put on a wide range of courses that cater for everyone from babies right through to pensioners!

"Our parent and toddler singing sessions are proving very popular and in the new year we will be running DJ sessions for young people and music courses for older learners. When the new Redbridge school opens in April, we will be able to increase the range of courses on offer and provide tuition in a purpose-built Music Resource Centre which will include a recording studio and professional DJ equipment, which we hope will attract more teenagers and young adults to get involved."

Regeneration education co-ordinator John Bridge said: "We feel that the project has many benefits for the local community and provides an opportunity for many different people of all abilities and ages to get involved, not only in developing their musical and singing talents, but hopefully into other learning."

The courses are free for local residents. For more information contact Kathryn Wiseman on 023 8078 6485.
