CHUTE Parish Council has identified a 'streng-thening tide of opinion' against opening up footpaths and bridleways in its area to motorised traffic.

In a letter to Wiltshire County Council, which is investigating a possible upgrade of a route from Chantry Lane, Upper Chute, cross country to Collingbourne Kingston, the Chute councillors object to any such action in the 'strongest possible terms'.

"Given the potential impact of the subject claim," the letter continued, "we have conducted some initial and necessarily hurried consultation with the interested community and are satisfied that our position is fully supported.

"It is our concern that access to the countryside should be both welcomed and protected.

"However, any extension of motorised access to include this route would have a detrimental impact on the rights and expectations of the wide group of current users."

The parish council letter points out that walkers, cyclists and horse riders from outside the community also use the present byways.

Motorised vehicles have not used the rights of way in the past and residents who have worked across the land for many years were ad-amant there had not been any vehicular use.

"Curiously, a number have however reported a sudden incidence of attempted vehicle use since your notice was issued - we are liaising with the police on this," the letter added.

The councillors have asked for detailed information on the alleged historical basis for making the route a bridleway.

A statement from the county council said the authority was investigating a request for a re-grading of a right of way in Chute.

"Part of that process is consulting with parish councils, landowners and other interested parties."
