TESTWOOD (Totton) and Hayling Island schools fought out a tense final of the Adidas community Cup for girls last week at Tauntons College with Testwood's Rebecca King scoring the all-important winner in the first half.

The Southampton school held on to their lead thanks to some fine goalkeeping.

Penalty shoot-outs decided both of the semi-finals, with Testwood seeing off Osbourne School (IOW) and Hayling beating Test Valley.

Testwood will now represent the Saints in the regional finals at Bristol in a few weeks time, and the grand final will take place at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff before one of the Nationwide League play-offs.

Sixteen schools entered the six-a-side competition, jointly organised by Saints and Tauntons College staff and students, and everyone voted it a real winner.

According to Julie Way, Saints Centre of Excellence coach and organiser, this was a great way for girls to have the opportunity to play in a tournament.

Taunton's assistant principal, Gwen Sylvester, was delighted with her students who helped in the pre-competition planning and practical organisation on the day.

She added that it had provided a very valuable experience for them.

Homefield Girls (Christchurch) beat Kingsdown (Swindon) 8-0 in the first round of the National Schools competition.

They join 31 other schools in the second round and were due to meet South Motton Community School from Devon today.

Homefield School is the venue for one of Saints Girls Coaching Centres.
