Hampshire had double interest at the Southern Regional Schools U19 tournament, played last weekend at Yateley.

King Edward VI first team played well against some strong opposition to finish third in their pool. Charlotte Essex, Jo Patrick, Amy Essex and Emma Lovell did well in defence while Anna Greaves and Emily Lewith ensured good distribution through the mid court. Alex Williams, Laura Misselbrook and Nicky Hempton scored a stunning 50 goals on the day.

Unforunately they struggled to score against one of the weaker sides despite having most of the play, so ended with a draw.

Until this point it was looking like a Mid-Hants clash in the semi finals with Itchen College.

Itchen, last year's winners, had a strong side but, even with England player Gemma Cornwall playing centre, weren't good enough to beat eventual winners Farnborough in the semi-final.

The weekend saw Mid Hants travel to neutral ground, Derby, to play Tyne and Wear, and the first 15 minutes were tight.

The quarter-time score was 12-11 to Mid Hants with Liz Pickers excelling at goal shooter and there was nothing in it at half-time, both teams locked at 22-22.

Cornwall was moved to centre and experienced duo Lorna Brown (goal keeper) and Shirley Eastwood (wing defence) were sent on and these changes proved to be crucial.

Mid Hants' dynamic speed through the centre court and their continuous pressure applied by the defence led to a three-quarter time advantage of 37-26 and this was stretched to 49-35 by the end.

The second team cruised to a 54-42 victory. Laura Pearce as wing defence and Debbie Pearce as goal keeper both put in solid performances.

The U14s put out their second side to lose a respectable 28-35 to Tyne and Wear's first side.

Other results - U18: won 35-25; U16A: won 31-28; U16B: won 36-22.
