MOTORISTS were today warned of dreaded contraflow systems about to hit Hampshire's £5.1 million motorway roadworks scheme.

Police urged drivers to keep their eyes peeled for changes in the carriageway which are likely to come into force on the M27 from 6am Wednesday.

The contraflow system, which will see traffic using two lanes in each direction, is likely to remain in place along the westbound carriageway for at least two weeks while resurfacing work is carried out on the eastbound.

Afterwards, contractors will move to the westbound lane while traffic flows in both directions on the eastbound.

Today Pc Tim Goodman, South-ampton police traffic management officer, warned officers would be clamping down on drivers breaking the 50mph speed limit through the roadworks.

"At all times drivers are advised to take extra care and be patient as they approach the contraflow," he said.

"Motorists should keep speed down and look out for signs.

"Those who tear along in a blazing hurry risk missing important information.

"They are also advised to allow extra time for journeys as traffic is likely to be slow-moving."

Contractors expect to have the initial contraflow in place between junction five at Southampton Airport and junction four at Rownhams Services by 6am tomorrow.

The 15-week repair and resurfacing programme on parts of the M27 and M3 is expected to continue until late February or early March.
