Ampfield (206-5) beat Waterlooville II. (205-7) by one run AMPFIELD maintained their improved form with a convincing win at the White Horse ground last Saturday. Skipper Frank Dixie lost the toss for the 10th match in a row and Waterlooville invited their hosts to bat first. Sahib and Williams continued where they had left off at Bramshaw the previous week with a level and even start. They sped up at just the right time to complete their second consecutive century partnership. This was broken when Williams got a leading edge to Langrish off the bowling of Johnson for 37.

Martin Langridge joined Saffy Sahib and hit a quick 20 before holing out. Alan Winter, making his batting debut for Ampfield, also hit out for 17 before Alan Bollard joined Sahib. But the latter was soon caught behind for 101 (his 3rd century of the season) and the innings closed on 206 for 5.

Waterlooville's innings got off to a bad start when Williams held on to a catch off Richard Light. This brought the Hudson father and son combination together and they started to open up until Hudson jnr was well caught in the gully by Charlie Baynes off Paul Barnes. He was soon followed by Johnson, who failed to score.

Langrish Jnr played the junior partner while Hudson carried on hitting at the other end. They put on 35 before Langrish went for four. This brought Connelly to the crease and with some very big hitting he was quickly in the grove But he went for a quick second run once too many and his partner Hudson was run out by Richard Light for 77.

The visitors were looking to Connelly to hit them home, but he soon followed Hudson, caught off a skied hit for 54. If Ampfield thought that was it they were soon thinking again when McFarland hit one of the biggest sixes ever seen at the Recreation Ground. But Langridge caught and bowled him soon after, leaving them to score 10 off the remaining five balls. Four were needed off the last ball, but Mortimer was only able to hit two, so Ampfield won by one run in a thrilling finish.
