HAMPSHIRE health bosses say the county is safe from a shortage of anaesthetic affecting some dental surgeries in other parts of the country.

Nationwide a shortage has cropped up because of a supplier of anaesthetic is pulling out. However bosses in Hampshire say the county's practices are not currently experiencing a shortage.

A spokesman for Southampton City Primary Care Trust added they had anticipated the problem and ordered extra supplies.

A Department of Health spokesman added: "We are working with existing suppliers to find solutions to the immediate problem and also bring longer term stability by introducing new suppliers to the market.

"We are in touch with health authorities and the British Dental Association to continually monitor the situation and the effect on dental practices."
