NOW HE JOINS BRITISH TEAM FOR INTERNATIONAL IN ITALY.
Weybridge student rower Nigel Maynard is heading for the big time after winning a gold medal at Henley.
The Duke of Edinburgh presented Nigel, from St George's School in Weybridge, with his gold medal at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Nigel is the first student ever from St George's College to achieve this feat.
The quad, composed of 18-year-old Nigel and pupils from Windsor Boy's and Claires Court School, Maidenhead, won one of the only two school races at the regatta earlier this month.
Nigel, who has just completed his A levels, put his success down to a strict training regime, often with 5am starts.
He said: "Although I have qualified for Henley in the past, I was delighted to be rewarded for our efforts."
Nigel's rowing coach at St George's College, Ian Nicoll, said: "I am very pleased, it is the first time one of our pupils has won a gold medal at Henley while still at the school."
But it is not the first time Nigel has been in the limelight; together with fellow St George's student Chris Loake, he has won the National Junior Championships double sculls twice.
He is now turning his attention to the international stage when he travels to Italy next month with the British squad to take on rowers from eight European countries competing in the Coupe de la Jeunesse.
