ROSSENDALE have secured their place in National League Three (North) but manager Mick Barnes was disappointed his side did not win by a bigger margin.

Dale, in their first season at national level, went in to the game needing just one point to make sure they were save.

And while they started brightly they failed to make the most of that early advant-age.

“I’m pleased with the result obviously, but again we started well and didn’t hammer home our advantage,” said Barnes. “Our derby against Rochdale will require a much higher return from our work-rate.”

Barnes singled out Tom Albinson and Appleton for praise, Appleton crossing for the first try of the game.

James Bramhall converted as Dale began to turn the screw.

However, Cleckheaton were the next to score, running a tap penalty to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Bramhall slotted over a penalty to make it 10-5 and in the second half, Paddy Pole powered over for Dale’s second try after 12 phases of play.

The conversion was missed by Bramhall and Cleckheaton added a late penalty.

“Outstanding displays from Albinson and Appleton, to name but two, saw us through,” added Barnes.

“League results mean we skip past Sheffield and close the gap again on Darlington.”
