Eastleigh's Street Pastors have new recruits

THEY HAVE been dubbed guardian angels who keep watch over Friday night fun-seekers.

Now Eastleigh’s team of Street Pastors have six new recruits ready to spread their wings and help those trying to get home safely after a night out on the town.

This will bring the total number of Street Pastors to 24, allowing teams to start serving the town later at night for every two weeks out of four.

Steve Smallwood, co-ordinator, said: “There is a need for a calming presence, caring, listening and helping, in the early hours for those who have been out enjoying the facilities of our town.”

The church-initiative started in July 2009 and has been welcomed on the streets of Eastleigh, operating between 8.30pm and 12.30am.

Now they hope to be able to stay out until 2.30am on some nights, offering vulnerable partygoers a listening ear or even flip-flops for the remainder of their journey.

Just for once would someone give a stuff about the safetly of people who are not out drinking, shouting and screaming and being a nuisance ?
Due to the police spending so much time on all night drunken mayhem sober , law abiding citizens at home get scant attention if they report criminal damage or drunken ASB..
The Pastors do not go into the side streets where this occurs, I presume they must stay in sight of the police for their own safety ?

All fine and dandy if those enjoying the facilities of the town are in a mood to listen, most are not and it takes a brave person to mess with some of the drunks (and druggies)that make the headlines in this paper. At least when I had to deal with those sort of people I had some attention getters on my belt, one being a .357. :)

lol @ last bit. Is B.L. an cop? We'll watch out for him on the US police shows. Wish we had their style of policing over here!

Street Pastors have done excellent work in Fair Oak and Southampton. It's great that regular people give up an evening/night to care for others.

It is great that people will do that, but it's sad they should need to...

So not only do the police have to look out for themselves if things turn nasty, they have to watch the backs of these people too.

All the decent residents are neglected during the day. There is no police presence during the day. Anti-social behaviour during tghe day is ignored.
When will the police give value for money to all the residents who pay their council tax?
