AIR passengers travelling to and from Southampton Airport are being warned to expect further travel misery today as Iceland's volcanic ash cloud continues to cause disruption.

UK and Irish aviation chiefs this morning ordered no flight restrictions covering most of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Passengers travelling to these destinations from Southampton Airport are being urged to contact their airline before travelling to the airport.

This afternoon's 5.30pm flight from Dublin to Southampton has already been cancelled. Meanwhile Edinburgh airport is to remain closed from 1pm until 6pm this afternoon while Glasgow airport will be shut until at least 7pm this evening.

A Civil Aviation Authority spokesman said: ''It's unlikely that the existing situation regarding Scottish and Northern Irish flights will change much during today.

''But we are pretty confident that the ash plumes will start drifting west across the Atlantic and that all UK air space will be clear of ash tomorrow.

''It's possible that if the strength of the wind picks up then some of the airports not operating at the moment might be able to handle flights later today. But it's certainly looking good for tomorrow.''
