Row over Rose Bowl parking

Rose Bowl googly over match parking Rose Bowl googly over match parking

A ROW has broken out over plans to use a playing field as a car park when Hampshire begins to host Test match cricket.

Bosses at the Rose Bowl need space nearby for spectators to leave their cars once the venue starts staging five-day international fixtures next year.

But proposals to use Greta Park in Hedge End have already met with opposition from those who fear it will create havoc on the roads on match days.

Hedge End Town Council has agreed to the idea in principle.

But the matter has already divided opinion among members, with some fearing it may end up causing traffic chaos and damaging the playing fields.

Hedge End man Daniel Selwood said: “The whole of the area surrounding the park will come to a standstill for a long period of time.

“It is not appropriate by any means.

“It is just going to churn up the grass and it could take away a facility from the local people.”

Staffing, signage and insurance costs for the parking scheme would be met by the cricket club, which would also be responsible for repairing any damage caused.

Several options are being investigated over compensation for the use of the park, councillors have been told.

That may mean a fee-per-car deal, a flat fee for the hire of the site or the provision of sports grants or cricket coaching for young people in the area.

The Rose Bowl is currently undergoing a massive £48m revamp to boost its crowd capacity and improve its hospitality, media and spectator facilities.

The redevelopment is a key part of the club’s ambition to provide a world class Test Match cricket stadium.

Rose Bowl managing director, Glenn Delve, said: “Nothing has been agreed with regard to Greta Park. It is one of a number of sites we are looking at.

“Each has its own merits and we are working closely with local councils to see what is available.”

The council has yet to set a date for a final decision on the proposal, but a spokesman said any approval would be subject to public consultation.

"Googly" eh? that's a good one. Usually it's "sticky wicket".

When the Lib Dem Mafia lent the Rose Bowl 32 million pounds they should have told them to use some of that to build a car park on site!

Ridiculous comment that shows chapelsaint has no understanding of the situation. I bet they've never been to the Rose Bowl. The nimby attitude of some local residents is really tiresome when the club and the council are trying to bring world class facilities that will boost the local economy.

how about upgrading M27 J7.
The signage and roundabout lay outs should be changed - very confusing with people swapping lanes causing tale backs.
or even better...build M27 J6!!

I fail to see what is ridiculous, and yes I have been to the Rose Bowl. All I suggested was that money could have been set aside to build a car par. I bet you are a lib dem councillor!

Still wouldn't solve the traffic problem though....
Saying that, i've never understood why people complain about traffic problems for events like this. You know where they are and when they're going to happen, so just don't drive at that time then you won't be affected by the traffic!

I should point out that the headline of this story has been changed since this morning. Nice to know someone reads these things!

I live in Hedge End and if Greta Park is used then Upper Northam Road which is already a busy road will come to a standstill. It is ridiculous to use a park where people walk their dogs and where kids play to park cars for events. Why didn't the rose bowl think of this when it was built?

What has annoyed many residents in Hedge End, is the way the Lib Dem Town Council has allowed the idea to progress this far without any sort of consultation. It has been exactly like the last Labour Government using its massive majority to get whatever it liked through Parliament, despite all the opposition.

I suggest it is particularly important to have good consultation on this matter given that i) the Rose Bowl development is actively promoted/encouraged by the Borough and ii) some Hedge End Town Councillors also sit on the Borough Council. There is obviously potential for the plans to be railroaded through, purely because of the unhealthy weight of Lib Dem numbers at local level.

I therefore think we need a few more Tories/UKIP and independent Councillors to speak-up against these ****-fool ideas in Council
meetings...

Bring on the local elections in 2011..!
