OBESITY costs the Southampton public a staggering £147m every year, it has been revealed.

With above national average figures showing one in four adults now clinically obese, city bosses are calling for immediate action to tackle the problem.

A raft of recommendations has been drawn up in a bid to stop the cost escalating to an estimated £217m in just five years.

Along with extending school breaks so youngsters have more time to exercise, proposals include improving the city’s cycle routes and holding ‘mass participation’ sporting events.
