HUNDREDS of residents turned out to see plans for a controversial new supermarket in Hampshire put under the spotlight.

Revised proposals for a Sainsbury’s store on the Abbey Mill site in Bishop’s Waltham divided opinion yesterday after they were displayed in the town’s Jubilee Hall.

Supermarket bosses have announced that a planning application will now be submitted by the end of the month, with building work starting in September if the green light is given.

The second public exhibition is the latest development since the battle between campaigners and supporters of the new store began 13 months ago.

Since the original proposals were submitted a number of changes have been made including a new landscaped area between the store and South Pond, improved pedestrian links between the store and St George’s Square and a new design to allow the building to blend into the historic market town.

The news comes after former Bishop’s Waltham resident, actress Amanda Holden, pictured, vented her anger over the controversial plans at the town’s carnival earlier this month.

Speaking at the exhibition yesterday, Bruno Moore, Sainsbury’s regional town planning manager for the south east, said: “We’ve had a good flow of people through the door – about 150 in three hours. We have a number of supporters for the scheme who would like to see Sainsbury’s come to Bish-op’s Waltham and a number of people who are concerned about the proposals particularly in relation to the effect that it’s going to have on the High Street. But if people are shopping in the supermarket they will be shopping in the High Street too.”

The Bishop’s Waltham Action Group protested outside the exhibition. Chairman Tony Kippenberg, said: “An awful lot of the village simply don’t want Sainsbury’s to come here.”

Sainsbury’s has agreed to help finance a £1.6m relocation of Bishop’s Waltham Surgery.

supply and demand
those that want it will use it those that dont want it will use it under protest win win.
would i use it well if i was in the area but they would'nt have a space for my six wheeler
but then nobody wants a lorry on the road these days but they still expect their loaf of bread in the stores or their newspaper to be there when they want it.
dont worry build it and the likes of the residents and of course the infamouse southy will come to realise that supply it and people wil use it

ordinary locals want this supermarket, I was told by my father ( who attended the meeting) that one man stood up and said "I never shop in supermarkets" lucky you if only the rest of us could afford to buy everything from the small independent shops!

would just like to add “An awful lot of the village simply don’t want Sainsbury’s to come here.”
What aload of tosh.
most residents have not made a comment and most resident are either appreciating the competition of a local store selling at above market price or a multi national giving good value., or they are closer to god they want the ways to stay the same, why not allow a company that is going to give back to the community via a new surgery and possibly more. they have bent over backwards to change their plans to meet the wants of others and lets face it those current resident of bishops waltham wont be around forever but the new residents that may or may not work well out of the area may just need somewhere to grab their shopping a little more local than driving to hedge end or Chandlers Ford
sorry in advance for spellin but hey 1-0 to england and a couple of bottles of wine from "MY" local sainsbury's" does make a difference

I have had experience of where people have campaigned against the building of a supermarket in the area, saying that it would hit local shops.
Checking some of them out, I discovered that they jumped in their car and head for the nearest supermarket instead of walking to the local shop.

Don't do as I do, do as I say!
NIMBYs!

Bishop walthem wants to move with the times , yes it a lovely little village and i have friends that live there ,but think of all the jobs sainsbury will offer and also thinking of the cost of petrol to get to eastleigh ,hedge end etc to do your daily/weekly shopping , with sainsburys on the doorstep got to be better then another TESCO popping up

"But if people are shopping in the supermarket they will be shopping in the High Street too." Rubbish, and I bet he knows it too. I am not anti-supermarket particularly but this kind of cr*p just gets my goat. Don't lie to people - they just see right through it!

Why don't they just allow peoples shops to run certain parts of sainsbury's, i.e. let the baker have his owner bakery inside sainsbury's instead of sainsbury's own and the same with the fish guy and butchers? atleast it's some sort of an agreement?

What's wrong with Tesco? They are generally cheaper than Sainsbury's!

i have nothing against tesco ,i worked for them for over 9 years but you got to admit they are popping up everywhere , why not give the other supermarket chains a chance. with reguards to the prices they can be the same with both.you talking about the price of items and you have a budgens in the village they are over priced
