Carried out at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, a post mortem on the body of Andrew Case, 33, revealed he died from a ligature suspension.

It is believed he killed wife Vicki and their two young daughters before hanging himself in the home in Provost Street yesterday.

The cause of death of the two girls has yet to be established. Post mortem examinations are due to take place this afternoon.

Acting Superintendent Gary Cooper said: “Detectives are continuing to investigate the background and the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.

“The families of everyone involved are understandably extremely shocked and distressed by what has happened and have asked that they are left alone to try and come to terms with their loss.”

Police have revealed they are still looking for the knife used to kill Vicki Case and possibly her children.

Acting Superintendent Gary Cooper said officers were still searching for the weapon both inside and outside the house in Fordinbridge.

A search has also been undertaken of the stream nearby, where Vicki and her children had been seen feeding the ducks just days before their deaths.

Police are refusing to be drawn further on details of the investigation but said any possible suicide note would now form part of the enquiry.

Specially trained family liaison officers are supporting relatives of both Vicki and Andrew Case, while the officers who made the initial discovery of the bodies in Provost Street have been offered counselling support.
