WE hope to be back next year. That is the message from the organisers of Southampton’s biggest ever mass cycling event after more than 10,000 cyclists descended on the city’s streets.

Hailed as a success by event organisers, the city’s first ever Sky Ride “exceeded expectations” as thousands flocked to cycle the 10km route.

Now bosses at Sky are set to hold talks with Southampton City Council in order to bring the popular event back to the city next year.

Vicky Fairclough, a Sky spokeswoman, said: “The day went very smoothly and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We are going to be working closely with Southampton City Council to see if we can bring it back to the city next year.

“It’s too early to say we will definitely be back but we hope we will be.

“One of the highlights of the event was the entertainment stage which was new this year. It went down very well as people sat down on the grass and enjoyed the various bands. “We’ve had a lot of good feedback from people saying they loved it and they want us to come back again next year.

“It was just so great to see so many people out on their bikes.”

The aim of the event, which was one of 12 taking place across the country this summer, was to encourage people of all ages and abilities to get back on their bikes and enjoy travelling around on two wheels.

The route gave cyclists the chance to take in the city’s iconic landmarks and sights, including the Bargate, the Titanic Memorial and gather some speed on the Common.

Councillor John Hannides, Southampton City Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “I was very impressed by the turnout and the organisation on the day. It was such a good success. “We very much hope that we will be able to host the event again next year. It’s one of those events that demonstrates Southampton is a city that has a good track record at hosting events like this.”
