Royston Smith to abseil down Weston's Canberra Towers

HE’S conquered Africa’s tallest mountain, trekked the Inca Trail, and walked across the Sahara Desert.

Now Southampton’s daredevil council leader will hurl himself off the city’s second tallest building – in the name of charity.

Councillor Royston Smith, 45, will join 40 people to abseil down the 230ft high Canberra Towers in Weston in support of the Jubilee sailing Trust.

The former RAF engineer who raised thousands for sick and wounded troops by reaching the summit of Kenya’s Mount Kilimanjaro earlier this year, said: “The Jubilee Sailing Trust is a remarkable Southampton-based charity that enables people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals.

“This abseil event will not only raise awareness about the great work that the charity does, but it will also help raise funds and challenge those abseiling for the first time to conquer their fears and gain a sense of personal achievement.

“I am proud to be part of this experience and hope my support helps raise awareness of the charity’s work.”

The married father-of-one was made leader of the council earlier this month after 80-year-old Alec Samuels stood down.

Tory Cllr Smith says he believes that lives can be changed by taking positive action and leading from the front and hopes to inspire many more people to take part in future abseils for the charity.

The sailing trust owns and operates the Lord Nelson and Tenacious tall ships which enable people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals.

Matt Gravelling from the trust said: “We regularly arrange hair-raising events, but it is the first time that something on this scale has been planned.

“With more than 40 |abseilers and many |well-wishers it’s bound to be a great event for all the family and we’re delighted that Cllr Smith has chosen to show his support to a charity that has been at the heart of Southampton since 1978.”

So both of you "Good Socialist" condone murdering Councill Smith by pushing him off a high rise tower whilst he attempts to raise some well needed funds for charity. Says a lot about "Good Socialists". Good luck today Royston, it may be a little wet out there today.

Surely the money he raises for charity is the good thing?

Why can't you Marxists ever pause for one moment to put aside your politics?

Although I don't have alot of time for Royston or his politic's, I wish him all the best, and respect him for all his efforts to raise money, he can have a fiver of my money when I see him next.

Firstly - I wish my job would allow me all that time off for jollies.
Second - again we are expected to praise some sanctimonious henry who has too much time on his hands, and is looking to weasel his way into the limelight under the guise of "cheeritee"
Thirdly - who is the joker who said it is a hair-raising event

It's called the invisible hand and it exists everywhere and is a benefit for all of us. It's why we get a choice of cars to drive a choice of what we want to eat etc and ensures quality. Why does a butcher ensure his sausages are the best? For your benefit? No, he wants you to buy them over another butcher, thus we you get good quality products and also explains why capitalism works better than other socialist ideas.

What has the invisible hand got to do with our council workers?
Are you roger irrelevant or what?

Royston Smith is a tireless worker for his electorate. I've come across most city councillors and they vary in their efforts. For the amount of time Royston puts in and the representation his gives he's among the best, alongside Labour's Carol Cunio and Gerry Drake of the Lib Dems.

There is a problem with terminology here.
I don't want a tireless worker, I want someone who gets results.

the invisible hand is only for the chosen few, you will not even get a look in, and it dont benefit us all not under a capitalist system.
you get the choice of cars and what to eat, under any system but you get a poorer quality goods under a capitalist system it runs a throw away society poorly made goods so they dont last long and you need to replace them more often.
this is just one reason why a socialist ideas works in the modern world and capitalism dont.

Basically for those that dont understand, even if Royston was doing it for himself it's still going to benefit people. Thanks Roger.

I agree with your statement about Gerry and Carol, however I found it hard to believe Royston spends as much time as those two excellent councillors in his constituency working for his constituents, his role as deputy and now leader would prevent this, also the time he spends propping up the bar with you at the Dean Rd Club also prevents him doing so

Sorry Atpost you can't give him his prize, he gets them given to him almost daily by Royston as a thank you for all the sucking up he does.

I also meet councillors from across the city on my travels for work, Don Thomas in Coxford works tirelessly for his constituents, as does Jane Odgers in Swathling and Sarah Bogle in Bargate ward, however we don't hear Condor Man singing their praises, local councillors are elected to serve their constituents, however some do it with less publicity than others.

When was the last time someone bought an Echo or browsed this site without seeing Royston's fizzog all over it?

It's like this.
Hard workers go into the real world. Politicians, liars, actors and egomaniacs join the council.
the WORST of them then try to be the big-fish, with charity scams, fete openings, and buying drinks at the bar for the creepy followers.

ps

I have served my country at peace and at war, I have seen active service in Ulster, I sit on three local charity boards as a trustee (voluntary) I also sit on a national charities board again in voluntary capacity.

I serve my community (not in a political capacity) and you have the nerve to people idiots because they see through this stunt, if you took the trouble to all my posts you would have read that I have little time for Royston Smith but respect what he is doing by raising money for charity.

Maybe if Royston wasn't plastered all over the newspaper or website others might not judge him for what he really is.

I would love to see Royston stood outside Sainsbury's in Bitterne collecting money for the Poppy appeal, rather than in the paper doing the self publicity bit.

I get really hacked off by the self and Echo promotion of Cllr Smith.
.
Every week thousands of people carry out fund raising stunts for extremely worthwhile and deserving cause. Each one of these people are great ....BUT.....they dont continually strive for the coverage that Smith seems to want or get given.
.
If you want to do a charitable stunt Cllr Smith then get on and do it but stop all of this strive for celebrity status whilst trying to do it.
.
Your self promotion is beginning to get my back up as i start to wonder whether you are now doing it for the right reason.
.
