THE FUTURE of one of the city’s walk-in centres hangs in the balance as health bosses consider its closure.
Bitterne Walk-In Centre could follow in the footsteps of Shirley and get the chop as NHS Southampton City continues to review unscheduled care across the city.
Fears that the popular service will face the axe has sparked fierce opposition from Southampton Itchen MP John Denham, pictured, who believes the centre is “too important” to close.
The trust’s board has agreed to a public consultation to consider the future of the nurse-led centre, with its closure one of five options to choose from. Other alternatives include a weekend-only service or a GP-led service.
Health bosses say the change is needed because there are too many services across the city offering the same treatment causing patient confusion about where to go. The report also says the trust must make cuts because it cannot afford to continue commissioning the current level of unscheduled healthcare.
But Mr Denham believes the walk-in centre, which was opened in 2003 to deal with minor infections, rashes, superficial cuts, sprains and blood pressure checks, has a vital role to play in the city.
He said: “Bitterne Walk-in Centre was one of the first walk-in centres in the country – a real pioneer. It’s popular with patients, an important local service and part of the community.
“If it isn’t currently meeting its purposes then its role should be developed in line with experience and patients’ wishes so that the healthcare challenges we face in South-ampton can be properly met.
“It would be a real shame if the walk-in centre was simply given up on. It’s too important to close.”
Backing his sentiments is ward councillor Royston Smith, who has raised strong objections to any proposals of closure.
He said: “As a local councillor I know the walk-in centre is held in high regard as one of the key front line services and valued by the local community.
“Its location in the eastern part of the city has significant deprivation and does not have easy access to the Royal South Hants Hospital and Southamp-ton University Hospitals Trust.”
The consultation is expected to start in the autumn and NHS Southampton City have stressed that no decision has been made.
Sheila Brooke, associate director of business development and chief nurse, NHS Southampton City, said: “It is important to stress that no decision has been taken to close Bitterne Walk-in Centre.
“The aim is to ensure that patients benefit from access to the appropriate high quality services in the most cost effective way possible.
“We welcome feedback from the public and those wishing to express their views.”

Are they better than the Bargate HMS Centre? Went there today having walked through the Boots chemist. I asked the (corpulent) lady at the reception desk - do you do a diabetes test here? No she said we are a GP surgery. OK I said do you know where I can get the test done. No dear I have no idea, she replied. . Is it just me?

perhaps if Denham and his cronies hadn't inflated GP's salaries 10 years ago perhaps these services would be more affordable. Labour also created so many tiers of management in the NHS it's no wonder things are now ending up in tears.

But then I ask why millions of decent British citizens decided to put their trust in uncaring characters like Cameron and Clegg?
It happened because by ignoring ordinary working classes since 1997 and keep on telling lie after lie to the nation NuLabour got its real right wing face exposed and lost the trust of many decent people.
Please stop insulting decent citizens by labelling them as “gullible” and try to look at the situation from ordinary folks point of view.
By the way I voted for Alan Whitehead, not because I have any faith in Conservatised NuLabour but because I trust him as a person.
