Don’t let Government split Island

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save the parliamentary constituency of the Isle of Wight are asking local businesses to display supportive posters in their windows.

The One Wight Campaign – with the slogan One Island, One MP, Don’t Divide the Island – is battling to prevent the Government splitting up the giant constituency as it pushes to redraw parliament-ary boundaries.

Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced plans to reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600, and equalise the size of UK constituencies to a national average of 75,700 voters.

The Island is currently home to some 110,000 voters, which means the constituency faces being downsized by 34,000 voters. These would be represented by an MP from the mainland.

The Island’s MP, Andrew Turner, is leading a cross-party campaign against the move centred around a petition which will be presented to Parliament on September 6.

Now I wonder why the ConDem Government would want to do this? Would it be because the Tories want the Conservative MP who is the MP for the Isle of Wight and who had a majority over Labour of 24,000 in this year's election on the island, to steal votes from the very closely fought battlegrounds in Southampton - Test and Itchen - currently held by Labour of course?

The Government are trying to gerrymander a safe majority in the future. The only way they can do this is by breaking up safe Labour seats.

perhaps they want to reflect the fact the majority of people in Itchen didn't vote for John Denham

Erm... I voted for him - John was and still is the strongest candidate for the Itchen area. Royston was beaten fair and square - admit it - John is more popular than Royston! I believe the voters made that distinction when they went to the polling stations back in May!
