Motorists welcome wheel clamping ban

HAMPSHIRE motorists have welcomed the news that a clamping ban is to be imposed.

Wheel clampers are set to be banned from operating on private land in a bid to tackle rogue operators who exploit drivers by charging hundreds of pounds in release fees.

The Daily Echo has reported on a series of incidents in which motorists received getting fines of up to £500 after parking for just minutes in the wrong place.

Clamping firms were hitting motorists with financial penalties, tow truck fees, charges for paying by card and even threatening a £50 “rudeness fee” if they failed to spot their small warning signs.

The coalition Government will now impose new legislation that will outlaw clampers operating on private land.

Motorist Debbie Ludlam, 30, of Locks Heath, has been caught twice by clampers – once for parking outside her sister’s home for a hour, resulting in a £250 charge, and a second time for parking in the forecourt of the closed HQ Garage, in Northam, for 20 minutes as she tended to a sick child, resulting in a £275 release fee.

She said: “I’ve been clamped and I’ve been blocked in by someone, so I have been on both sides, but I hate clampers.

“The fines are ridiculously high and the system is completely unfair.

“I feel it is not about stopping people parking dangerously or in the wrong places but rather it is a money-making outfit.”

Mortgage manager Nick Carr, 28, of Bitterne, who was clamped at the same garage, said: “It think it’s obscene what they charge, it is like they believe they are a law unto themselves. I hope this forces the dodgy firms out of business.”

Announcing the new legislation yesterday the equalities and criminal i n f o r m a t i o n minister Lynne Feat h e r s t o n e said private firms would be banned from clamping or towing vehicles but would still be able to ticket parked cars.

Only the police and local authorities will have the power to tow vehicles away in exceptional circumstances.

More than 2,000 clamping licences will be revoked under the new legislation. Anybody using a clamp on private land could face a fine or even jail.

Who enforces the proposed new ticket system? Who polices right to appeal?
The system will never work. Private land owners will simply have to invest in restricted parking measures.

This day couldn't come too soon, there is no place for these bullies.

If the clamping companies wish to survive they need to diversify, train and become approved installers of barrier systems etc and compete legally and ethically with other companies!

I see both sides of the coin however if clamping companies charged less and didn't take the mick so much they wouldn't find themselves in this situtation. I agree with a fine but what they were charging was EXTORTIONATE!! At the end of the day, private land owners should have some kind of gate system which blocks the cars from getting on their land.

get your self a citroen and drop the suspension wheel clampers are not allowed to damage a car while clamping or while that clamp in on the car its not allowed to do damage, the cost to them will be a lot bigger than the fine they will charge you. keep making claims against clampers and they soon go out of business where there insurance primium will cost to much to cover you hit one it effects them all.

I was clamped once in the Car Park outside my appartment in Ocean Village as someone had pinched my parking space. I simply walked over the road to the tool hire place and removed the clamp with an angle grinder. Left the car where it was and denied any knowledge.

Nothing more was said although me and the clamping guy did exchange a few words, not that I understood much of what he'd said!!

How come you can't spell the word apartment?

How come nobody reported you for criminal damage?

What really happened?

Why can't private landowners politely ask 'offenders' to move their cars? "Excuse me, but this is private property. Would you please move your car?" or "Will you be long? This is private property and I'd be grateful if you didn't park here again". Okay, so a few people will resist, but surely the polite route should be tried first.

Just talk things through.

1. A simple error.
2. Because I denied any knowledge, hence leaving my car where it was.
3. Try reading my post or did my spelling mistake cause some confusion.
4. Get out more.
