Ah that would be a nice dream - with thumpers running once again from Andover Junction to Southampton Terminus!

Yes, what a dream, alas that's all it is. Don't know whether you have them Andy, but I have a couple of good books on the Sprat and Winkle line. Here's the references:-

"Andover To Southampton" by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith.
ISBN 0-906520. I'm sure I picked that up at the Model shop in Alton on one visit.
"Andover to Redbridge The Sprat & Winkle line" by Nigel Bray.
ISBN0-9544859. Had to order that one.
Really good reading if you are interested in the rail system the way it used to be.

Many thanks B.L. I have the Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith book which I enjoyed very much, but I'll keep an eye out for the other one you mentioned. I rode the line when I was a small lad living in Andover, and I always associated it with the exitement of going away on holiday to the coast or going to see the ships in port. Like so many other lines it would probably do good business today. I've always felt that the biggest crime to the railways was not Beeching but the foolish ministers later who allowed the old routes to be built over.

Glad you have the book. True about ministers but British Rail were also guilty, inasmuch that they quickly ripped up track and allowed the land to be built on, because they knew that there was a lot of pressure from various people that wanted to keep the infrastructure intact. Possibly, they were worried about Beeching's decisions being reversed, and yes, guess who were in charge of British Rail ? Wouldn't the old Didcot, Newbury and Southampton line have been a boon today, a lot of it was double tracked too.
