THE new council rubbish and recycling park at Southampton docks was given planning permission amid concerns it could cause traffic mayhem.
Port owners ABP and other businesses fear the £13m depot on part of the former Calor Gas and Dimplex Site off First Avenue will clog up access to the docks and the Millbrook Trading Estate.
Motorists will be sent on a one-way route through the dump from First Avenue to Manor House Avenue and Third Avenue.
Despite some reservations, councillors approved the plans submitted by their own waste chiefs.
Rubbish operations at the existing Town Depot by the Itchen Bridge will move to the new site where up to 400 staff will be based. About 175 will work from a new three-storey office.
A fleet of 37 trucks will be based there overnight with crews arriving for work at 5am.
The centre is due to open in 2012. The 11-acre Town Depot site in Endle Street is being sold for a snow dome leisure development.
