Young thespians step into Euripides limelight

DOZENS of talented Hampshire youngsters are putting the finishing touches to a seductive retelling of Euripides’ searing and vibrant play The Bacchae.

The budding actors, some pictured, all teenagers from various schools and colleges across the county, embarked on a ten-day residency at Winchester University and are now in final rehearsals at The Nuffield for the Hampshire Youth theatre production, which opens on Thursday.

The company offers 14 to 21-year-olds the opportunity to work with arts professionals at Southampton’s only producing theatre, The Nuffield.

Jenny Marshall, aged 19, is the stage manager for The Bacchae before heading off to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to start the Technical Theatre and Stage Management course.

She said: “The hard work that is put into the shows by cast and crew is extraordinary! You meet new and interesting people and have the chance to push yourself without feeling uncomfortable.”

The Bacchae runs until Saturday September 11. Tickets are priced £10 from 023 8067 1771 or nuffieldtheatre.co.uk.
