POLICE and air accident investigators were today trying to establish how two light aircraft crashed, leaving two people dead.
The collision happened in the skies over Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight late yesterday afternoon.
A member of the public saw it happen and called police at 5.08pm.
One of the aircraft, with two people on board, was badly damaged but managed to land safely at Bembridge airfield.
However the second crash landed in remote woodland, where both people on board were pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers say that last night as darkness fell it was decided that both the aircraft and the bodies in the wreckage would remain in situ.
The investigation and removal will continue this morning.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have come across wreckage from the crash, which they believe would have been spread across a big area, to take it to Newport Police Station.
Inspector Paul Saville has appealed for witnesses to come forward by calling 101.
