Drunk caught urinating on Southampton Cenotaph during student Carnage night

A student urinates on the Cenotaph in Southampton during a 'Carnage' night in the city. A student urinates on the Cenotaph in Southampton during a 'Carnage' night in the city.

A DRUNKARD has been caught on camera urinating on Southampton's war memorial, during a student pub crawl.

The image was captured during a controversial organised bar crawl through the city centre.

He was one of 1,000 boozed-up students taking part in the Carnage event to coincide with Freshers' Week at Southampton's two universities.

As they made their way towards the final destination, Squares, the young man stopped to urinate on the Cenotaph in Watts Park, which bears the name of hundreds of heroes who died in the first and second world wars.

For a video of the top stories in today's Daily Echo, click the front page.

Carnage hit the headlines last year when the picture of another drunken student relieving himself over poppies at a war memorial in Sheffield sparked outrage.

I am young and still respect those people that serve our country,
So why can't other young people get it through their thick heads aswell to respect.
It costs nothing.

The city fathers understood that people sometimes had the need to urinate and so provided wonderful public conveniences on the corner of Commercial Road and Above Bar - just yards from the Cenotaph. These were closed down a few years ago and the area concreted over.
Some call this progress.

The guy is a fool. But take away all public toilets and what do you expect? This is not the responsibility of the University or Carnage. It is the Council who have closed the public conveniences (the clue is in the name) and frittered our money away on rubbish.
He should be made to do community service in a veterans home.

This looks a bit staged to me. He's well lit (i.e. not a camera flash) but it was night time. Is the War Memorial flood-lit? Who would choose to take a pee in such a well lit place?
Who takes pictures of people having a pee?

Not too long now until Remembrance Sunday, the 14th of November. Once this young man is identified, perhaps he would care to join the rest of those remembering our fallen, join in the memorial service, and lay a wreath in their memory? Let him stand in shame, alongside the war veterans and the families of those who have been lost.

News Fanatic says...

There is no excuse for urinating on the cenotaph but there is a huge shortage of public toilets in Southampton.

The West End of London has toilets that emerge out of the ground (true) at night. Perhaps Southampton should invest in the same in the Above Bar/Bedford Place area.

At least men can find a dark alleyway to do it but I feel sorry for women.

Steve Hudson says...
10:50am Tue 5 Oct 10

I also love the assumption he is drunk and he is a student.
He may have bought that t-shirt off someone and posed for the picture at 5am.
Where are the contextual pictures which show him staggering back to his friends?

GX Saint says...
11:06am Tue 5 Oct 10

Are we sure that the photo is genuine and that the young man's picture hasn't been put on there in place of the original perp? The shadow suggests that the culprit is a police constable wearing his helmet.

If this is a genuine picture fine, identify the person and kick him out of uni. However the picture especially the shadow and the aspect of the shadow in the foreground do not appear to relate to what we are actually seeing.
Also Mr Reeve were you not a student once. no doubt getting your life as well as academic qualifications. Would you rather 1000 students hit town on their own, or in smaller stewarded groups? I m sure i know what the publicans and police would prefer.

i'm sorry but all adults can either go when they are near a toilet or hold it until they are. If you go drinking from bar to bar they have plenty of toilets in them...go before you leave it's simple!

Even if he really desperately needed to go...there are plenty of trees around the park why not use those rather than a memorial?! The punishment should be made very clear for this so to highlight it to everyone else. A fine and community service should be the minimum.

Yeah, it does look a bit staged. It's possible, especially as whoever took the photo will no doubt be aware of the controversy caused at the Blackpool war memorial.
.
Needless to say, if it isn't staged this guy should be kicked off his uni course (assuming he's a student) and made to do community service. On top of that he should be named and shamed. Some people need to learn some respect and decency.

The whole cenotaph is well lit up at night time...this is not from the flash of a camera!

There are CCTV cameras around there so you have to be pretty stupid to do something like this in a well lit area in front of them...

The camera taking the photo is at the same height as the "student".

Sorry, but this lad is drunk. He is not making a political statement by urinating on the Cenotaph on purpose. He is likely to not know the area and probably doesn't even know what he is doing. Everyone does silly things when they are drunk, and yes he should face the consequences, but I cannot imagine he is going this on purpose and wouldn't have done it sober. Perhaps the Echo could give the Council some grief for refusing to restore the engravings of people's names on the memorial, which would have cost a paltry 300k?

Does being a student excuse a person from conforming to accepted standards of behaviour?

My point is that Mr Reeve has made several assumptions without being in full command of the facts..
. Does he know for sure this picture is genuine.
.He makes the assumption that the person is (a) A student (b) A "drunkard"
Although you would have to say if it is a genuine picture "drunkard" would be the kindest term you could use.
He then finally makes the wild claim that there were "A thousand boozed up students" again is this fact written by a skillful reporter, or sensationalist journalism?

Maybe. But with the record Southampton has over attacks in the park (and I'm sure there have been some in Watts Park?) I wouldn't fancy straying that way for a wazz personally.

And this is not going to be received well by those on here, but nonetheless: Dead people are dead and I'm sure they couldn't care less. There is no excuse for someone to do this, however if people want to use the Carnage as a scap-goat it only high lights the problems with society today. Everyone wants to pass the blame and no wants to stand up and take responsibility. He needs to be named and made to do community service. It is not the event to blame but a whole load of factors. Lets not be naive and believe this would not have happened if Carnage did not exist.

If this boy has been raised in such a way that this is acceptable behaviour then he would have done it whether he was wearing a carnage top or not.

Having been a student and attended Carnage I can say from a first person perspective that the event is well organised and the stewards go beyond the call of duty to keep people safe.

I personally can't understand a society that would prefer unsupervised students roaming their town drinking then a stewarded event where drink prices are higher, then any student night, where the numbers are controlled.

Finally, everyone is happy to criticise the youth of today, but who actually stands there and takes a picture of this happening? A photographer, no doubt a lot older, ready to point the figure at youth but simply stands by in the name of glory for his career rather then actually act and stop the incident ever occurring!! Is this an example to follow?

I believe the picture was staged as know for a fact the front of the memorial is heavily watched by stewards throughout the night. Strange that one boy snuck around the back, where it happened to be well lit and low and behold a press photographer just happened to be there. That seems very morale???

By all means blame todays younger generations for the way this country is going but at least act to change this and not stand and take a photograph!!! What kind of message does that send?

We live in a world where the media distort decent values and for some reason seem to promote personalities who are no better than pond life.

One only has to see from the w/e's most watched program how it was not talented , skilful or even hardworking entrants who were voted through- instead the rewards go to two contestants who proved nothing except having the loser's gift of the gab (gob).

May I suggest that all the Echo editorial staff and everyone of those above who have posted sanctimonious rants – provided that they have never in their lives, ever passed water or performed a Technicolor yawn in an inappropriate place – be invited to stone him to death.

Go into the park at night? You've gotta be kidding. So many attacks and assaults that the police themselves effectively declared it a no-go area a while back. Shame they couldn't have just patrolled it regularly instead.
I completely agree with you but not the park im talking about. The central parks by the bus shelters is were attacks and all sorts have happened but nothing the top end of town behind the cenotaph. Or saying that the park opposite the cenotaph which is more lit up and more opened space woth less bushes and trees. My point is that there are more places for this rather than the cenotaph.

In fact, if it wasn't for the Echo reporting on it, no'one would know anything about this and no'one would be offended. Nothing's been damaged, and no'one's been hurt. Frankly, there are more important issues to deal with in Southampton than a drunken student taking an insensitively judged p***.
"Dead people are dead and I'm sure they couldn't care less."

If your grandparents are no longer alive will it be okay if I p1ss over their memorial headstone?
Of course not claus. But then again, if it wasn't publicised in the papers I wouldn't know about it and therefore couldn't be offended by it.

You've addressed one (admittedly slightly provocative) sentence out of my post. What about the rest?
"slightly provocative"?

Come off it!

The "slightly provocative"was wrapped within other stuff by design, to make the overall post appear balanced. But, it's not balance.

The notion of questionable or offensive behaviour being inconsequential if not observed or reported, fails the logic test.

If a murder or a rape is not reported it is inconsequential an event, and assumes some spurious invalid importance when reported?

Your usual impressive wordcraft and highly-readable commentary on local happenings has taken a hit this time.!

The evidence for your view being out of touch is demonstrated by the overwhelming abhorrence by other posters to the p1sser in the article.

No excuse. The guy was TOTALLY out of order. He just didn't give a **** where he was doing his 'business', nor what that structure means to so many. I wonder how he'd feel if his family were to point out to him that he had an ancestor commemorated on that monument, should that be the case. Ashamed, perhaps? Indifferent, more likely. And that is part of what is symtomatically wrong with a lot of people in these times - and not just the young either. On the general subject of the provision of public toilet facilities; NO excuse there either. Local authorities should most certainly NOT be closing them down, unless they are in a state of extreme disrepair, and even then they should be rebuilt. There are all kinds of designs which are relatively innexpensive to build and maintain. It should be a fundamental right (enshrined in law, if I had anything to do with it!) that the public have public toilet facilities provided in every town and city, even if only those little electronic door 'space ship' type designs. Funding (by sponsorship if necessary) simply MUST be found. It's quite despicable and innexcusable when it's not. People should not be put in a position of feeling awkward by entering e.g. a cafe with the feeling of being obliged to buy something in order to use a toilet facilitry. Not every town has a department store or a supermarket (with a toilet) handy.

Your argument doesn't hold up claus. Rape and murder are crimes against a person, which involve harm to another. An ill-judged wazz causes to harm or damage to either property or person.

And as for your last paragraph - since when was the majority view of Echo commenters a sensible yardstick for what's right???!!!! :-D

Your first paragraph is weak, nay indefensible. People can be hurt and damaged - the feelings of the relatives of those named on the memorial who viewed the picture, read the story and read comments such as your previous "slightly provocative " crass nonsense. :-(

Your second paragraph is a gem and I take my hat off to you for it. :-)

It's all Thatcher's fault. I've learned from reading this forum for eons, that everything that ever happened in the entire history of Humankind, is down to that pesky woman.

He needs to be punished serverely and not just a small fine or picking up a little bit of rubbish in a council estate..... but something that makes him really realise how totally disrespectfull he really is.... i would even go as far as suggesting he visit Afganistan for a few weeks and have a small taste of what these heros have been and are going through.
If he's named and shamed maybe we should ask how he would feel if someone had gone to a cemetary and P'd on his family's grave!!
