A SOUTHAMPTON grandmother was joining hundreds of fundraisers in a 5K run today to raise awareness of an illness which threatens newborn babies.
Marie Birkett from Sholing is taking part in the Big Fun Run on Southampton Common and is raising cash for Group B Strep (GBS) Support after her baby granddaughter Rosie died from the infection four days after she was born.
By joining hundreds of runners who will each be raising cash for a series of good causes, Marie, 64, said she hopes to raise awareness of the infection that many pregnant women may not be aware of.
“If my daughter-in-law Lindsay had known about GBS before Rosie was born, her infection could have been prevented and the trauma we as a family went through averted,” she said. For more information about the charity visit gbss.org.uk. The Big Fun Run is taking place on Southampton Common.
