Adoption Week appeal

HAMPSHIRE County Council is looking for people to adopt up to 60 children who have been taken into its care.

A bid to encourage more people to adopt has been launched to coincide with National Adoption Week.

The council’s adoption service is looking for people to provide loving, stable and permanent homes for children separated from their birth families.

Many have suffered abuse or neglect or come from troubled backgrounds.

Councillor Roy Perry, executive member for children’s services, said: “Children come into our care for a variety of reasons but one thing they all have in common is a need to be part of a loving care home.

“We place few babies for adoption so if you are able to look after older children, children with special needs or feel you can give a home to more than one child, so that brothers and sisters can live and grow up together, please do contact us.”

My friend's parents took a number of children with special needs on and they gave them a really happy home they otherwise wouldn't have had. It's time adoption was looked at as a way forward for thousands of children who need decent homes.

There was a very good article in a national broadsheet last month about a white middle class couple (married man and wife) who have been trying to adopt for years (their IVF efforts having failed). They have been turned down every time. It turns out that adoption agencies had been denying them the opportunity in favour of well (I shall choose my words carefully) non middle class white couples who were preferably gay. They were even interrupted on one occassion that they phoned an adoption agency and told 'Look, i know this sounds a bit harsh but I wouldn't want you to waste your time, but are you white middle class?'. This did not happen in Hampshire but apparently it is something of a national trend. Why has this policy been allowed to happen, it's a disgrace and I hope that Hampshire CC have different criteria than this poor couple had to face.

(I would put the link to the story on here but then the whole post would be deleted)
